Common cleansing mistakes
Cleansing is the first- and arguably the most important step- in any good skincare routine. Avoid these common cleansing mistakes to keep your skin in tip-top shape!
Not washing hands first
You wouldn’t eat off a dirty plate, and same goes for your hands! This is especially so if you’re not using a washcloth or facial sponge/ cleansing brush.
Make sure to wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly before applying your cleanser and lathering it up to a foam! This ensures none of that bacteria from your hands makes its way to your face 🤢ðŸ¦
Skipping the double cleanse
We have stressed this multiple times, but it has got to be said.
Double cleansing is not just for days where you apply makeup, but also when you have applied sunscreen. Due to the properties of sunscreen, your regular water/ gel-based cleanser is not enough to dissolve and remove the sunscreen + other sebum and dirt on your face.
Be sure to cleanse with an oil-based cleanser or makeup remover before your usual cleanser. This ensures your skin is properly cleansed and ready for the rest of your skincare routine!
Over-washing
Dermatologists generally recommend sticking to cleansing once in the morning and once at night. Washing your face too often, or too hard, may risk irritation and inflammation, as well as compromising your natural skin barrier.
However, if your skin is really oily, or if you have just returned after a full day out with a face mask on, you can do a simple cleanse with a water/ gel-based cleanser to get rid of the dirt and oil trapped under your mask.
Using cleansing scrubs daily
Exfoliating 1-2 times a week can aid in boosting skin cell turnover and a brighter, more youthful complexion.
However, using physical scrubs daily may cause more harm than good- these scrubs can cause micro-tears in your skin and lead to skin inflammation and injury!
Swap to chemical exfoliants for gentler exfoliation e.g. cleansers with AHA/BHAs, but read the labels carefully to ensure they are gentle enough for daily use.Â
Cleansing too quickly
Going through the motions and swiping on some cleanser quickly while in the shower is probably a habit we all have, but don’t forget to take time to make sure to reach around the tricky, hard-to-reach bits.
This includes the area around your T-zone, and up to your hairline and neck too! These areas often collect oil and dirt easily, and are often missed when cleansing in a rush.
Temperature is too hot/ cold
A hot flannel feels really shiok on your face after a long day, but using water that is overly hot/ cold is not good for your skin!
Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils and causes your skin to dry out (which you may have noticed if you like to take hot showers).
Water that is too cold is also not great for effective cleansing. Bacteria and debris can get trapped as your pores tighten and won’t clear out as easily.
Make sure to get the temperature just right, Goldilocks ✨
